Are there different grades of birch hardwood?

Grades of Birch Hardwood

Birch hardwood is available in different grades, each with its own characteristics and suitability for various applications. Here's a summary of the different grades of birch hardwood:

1. Select & Better:

This grade is the highest for birch hardwood and is almost entirely free of defects, offering exceptional durability and appearance.
It has smooth surfaces with few knots and other flaws, making it a great choice for high-quality finishes in furniture, cabinetry, and other high-end uses .

2. Second & Better:

This grade is a combination of first and second-grade wood from a production run, with the second grade being the lowest grade allowed.
All defects are tolerated in this grade, though the wood must lay and give a serviceable floor. It has a rustic appearance and is suitable for projects that do not require a high-quality finish .

3. Other Grades:

Lower grades of birch hardwood, such as Grade BB/CP, BB/WG, Grade CP, Grade C, and Grade WG, have more knots and flaws but are still suitable for various uses, including concrete forms, packaging, and other applications that do not require a high-quality finish.
